Wrinkle Treatments: What is BOTOX ®
For the last few year Botox has been permanently in the media, so much so, that few of us have not heard of it but what exactly is Botox? The article below examines the world of Botox and introduces it in simple, easy to read and understand terms.
Essentially Botox is the Botulinum Toxin but it has been through certain processes to ensure that it can be used by humans. Botulinum, in its untreated form, is incredibly poisonous to humans, so much so that many would say that it is one of the most poisonous substances to mankind.
Botox® is a registered trade mark for a product made from botulinum toxin A (one of the seven nearotoxins, named A to G, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum). Clostridium botulinum causes the well known food poisoning called Botulism which can cause paralysis and death (it stops the nerves from transmitting the messages to muscles which tells them to contract).
Botox® is FDA-approved and, therefore, considered safe for use in humans. It is commonly used in treating spasms and involuntary muscle contractions seen in blepharospasm, cervical dystonia and strabismus.
Several years ago the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved Botox Cosmetic for aesthetic use but to only be made available on prescription. Because Botox does carry some risk the FDA also said that it should only ever be injected once every 3 months and then only using the smallest amount possible. People taking antibiotics, pregnant and breast feeding women should all avoid using Botox due to the associated risk of adverse reaction.
Commonly known as Botox, because of the fact that the treatment involves the injection of Botox into the muscle tissues of the face, the treatment is most often performed in strictly controlled medical environments. The injection temporarily paralyzes the area and thus removes deep furrows and frown lines (known as glabellar lines) and any wrinkles. Sadly the effects are only temporary as over a period of some weeks, the effects wear off and the lines and wrinkles reappear.
Due to the massive increase, over the last few years, in the popularity of Botox has led to the appearance of the so called "Botox Party" where people meet, in a social environment, to have it. Due to the fact that the consumption of alcohol is highly likely at such events the FDA have been forced to issue warnings that having alcohol in your system while having the treatment can lead to marked increases in the amount of bruising.
An extremely similar product to Botox is the brand called Dysport which is increasing in popularity. Unfortunately, because the treatment paralyzes the muscles it is common for folk who have it to suffer from a face which is almost devoid of expression. Because of this many folk look to the treatments known as microdermabrasion and chemical peels, as a solution to the problem of fine lines, wrinkles and other skin related and aging related problems.
